Cape Coast Castle: Where History and Memory Meet
Cape Coast Castle is one of the most significant historical sites in the world. Built by the Swedish in 1653 and later controlled by the British, this fortress served as one of the largest holding centres for enslaved Africans during the transatlantic slave trade. Today it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The History of Cape Coast Castle
At its peak the castle held thousands of enslaved Africans in dark cramped dungeons. Estimates suggest more than 30,000 enslaved Africans passed through the castle each year at the height of the trade. The contrast between the airy rooms above for European officers and the horrific conditions below is the most striking aspect of a visit.
